“On the Wall and Underfoot,” the Helen Bumpus Gallery exhibit featuring traditional and contemporary art by Duxbury Rug Hookers opens Monday, March 3, followed by a free opening reception with the artists on Friday, March 7, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The show, which runs through May 3, will be one of Duxbury Community Collaborative’s Out-to-See-Duxbury town-wide events that day.
Duxbury Rug Hookers began almost 25 years ago when a few women started meeting in Olga Rothschild’s Duxbury home to share their mutual passion for the art of rug-making and to foster the type of fellowship integral to this folk tradition born of frugality.
They continue to hook in various styles using new and recycled wool fabric, along with chemical and vegetable dyes to create both bright and muted colors in their rugs.
Recently the group created “Circle of Friends” for a silent auction to benefit the Bumpus Gallery.
