Artist Statement
I am pleased to have another opportunity to feature my work at the Helen Bumpus Gallery as unfortunate timing to plan to open a show in March 2020 precluded the live exhibit from opening. Hopefully, we are emerging from this era with enhanced appreciation of the ability to see art in person and connect with each other.
Whether home on Cape Cod or in my varied travels, my intent is to translate the essence of place into my artwork. An undulating sand dune, the ebb and flow of the tides, the geometry of a marsh, or the delicate fronds of palm trees swaying in the wind all make for fascinating interpretations of a visual connection with the landscape or the ability to bring to life objects that capture my gaze in my immediate environment. Soft pastel on sanded papers or textured boards is my preferred medium as I enjoy the immediacy and vibrancy of the effects I am able to achieve. I strive to show a range of effects and emotions through my art.
My art is inspired by the beauty and power of the landscape and creative energy of fellow artists, which are typically plentiful all around me as a washashore on Cape Cod and sorely missed during the past few years of pandemic isolation. I was sustained by vivid memories of warm winter sojourns as well as the gift of living in such a rich landscape in every season. Inspiration in these turbulent times comes from an undying belief in our will to survive and prevail and to use my art as a means of expression.
Artist Biography - Elinor Freedman
Cape Cod washashore Elinor Freedman is drawn to the vibrancy and immediacy of the medium of pastel. Using sanded papers or textured boards with acrylic or watercolor underpaintings, Ellie’s pastels show a range of effects that bring her paintings to life. She has exhibited work in numerous juried exhibits in New England and New York. Ellie is an elected artist member of the Salmagundi Club of New York a juried master artist at the Cape Cod Art Center, a juried member of the National Association of Women Artists, an associate member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and the Pastel Society of America, and a member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod for which she has served as a board member and coordinates a scholarship program for students who aspire to careers in the arts. Ellie also serves as docent chair at the Cape Cod Museum of Art where she enjoys collaboration with docents to curate museum exhibits highlighting works from the museum’s permanent collection. Her work is represented by Eastwind Gallery, Orleans, MA; Tanuki Gallery, Brewster, MA; Elburne, Dennis and Mashpee, MA; the Shop at the Cape Cod Museum of Art; and the Underground Bakery, Dennis, MA.
