Artist's Statement
Gail Nathanson is a professional oil painter who paints both on location, as well as in her studio.
“What interests me the most, as a visual artist, is to tell a story of the familiar. I am moved to paint images of the ordinary and unexceptional. Glimpses into the unremarkable corners of life are what inspire me. When I paint, I act as a storyteller, often leaving viewers with the task of filling in the blanks or finishing the story for themselves. I don’t want to give away too much detail, but enough to get the viewer started. One of the greatest influences on my work is the American painter, Edward Hopper. I look for high contrast on my subject matter and render the images in such a way that the viewer can place the light source by reading the shadows and the play of light."
