Show Description
The Mya was built in 1939 by William Watson Taylor at the Long Point Marine Boatyard of Duxbury, MA. The Long Point Marine is now owned and operated by Dwight Smith.
The 50 foot Concordia Schooner was commissioned to be built by Dr. Hermon Carey Bumpus Jr. of Duxbury, MA. Dr. Bumpus and his wife Helen longtime residents of Duxbury enjoyed many years sailing aboard the Mya with family & friends. The memorabilia in the exhibit tells some of the journey the Bumpus’s traveled while sailing their beloved Schooner, Mya!
Dr. Bumpus’s Granddaughters Jane Bumpus Nielsen of Marblehead, MA & Christina Bumpus Wilson of Portland, Oregon collaborated & researched the history of their Grandfather’s Schooner. This exhibit is dedicated to their uncle Dr. Frank T. Bumpus of Cold Spring, NY who enjoyed sailing the Mya whenever he could find a pocket of time to be on the water.
Researching the history of their beloved Schooner brought back many childhood memories of sailing with their sisters & Cousins. The roots of the Bumpus’s can be traced back to 1621 with Edward Bumpas their ancestor who sailed to America on the Good Ship Fortune! Sailing for the Bumpus’s began a long time ago!
