Dick McEvoy

Dick McEvoyDick McEvoy is a Signature Artist and former Board Member of the Pastel Society of America, and he has recently completed a 7 year term as President of the Connecticut Pastel Society. Dick has exhibited in Normandy, Feytiat and in Giverny, France, Florence, Italy and in Taipei, Taiwan, along with numerous sites in the United States, and his work is in over 200 private and corporate collections. His artwork has been included in publications such as Pure Color/Best in Pastel, Art du Pastel en France, and the Pastel Journal.

“As an artist I find myself inspired not only by the landscapes and vistas of my travels, but also by the surroundings of local color here in Connecticut, and there are other times when I feel I must paint directly from my mind’s emotions … as I merely think of a place I have loved.

My work represents a collection of paintings from trips to Europe and around the U.S., as well as locations near my home, and it also includes pure abstract emotions created in my studio and in my mind.”

Dick McEvoy was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and lived most of his formative years in Duxbury, Massachusetts. He paints impressionistic landscapes in pastel and oil, and he has recently ventured into abstract expressionist-type oil paintings with palette knife.

“I love to paint because I only paint what moves and excites me at a particular point in time.  My art is not “reporting” and it’s not “interpreting”…it is simply my expression of pleasure.”

Dick has his work in 200+ private and corporate collections. In the spring of 2007 Dick had a One-Man Show at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport CT; and he has had work exhibited at Pastel Society of America, Connecticut Pastel Society, The Mattatuck Museum, The Norwich Slater Museum, Audubon Artists, Kent Art Association, Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, Pastel Society of Maine, and the Ridgewood Art Association.

At Brown University, he majored in Psychology, and took courses at the Rhode Island School of Design.  While at Wharton Business School he studied with Violette DeMazia at The Barnes Foundation.  He is mostly self-taught, but is quick to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of his two mentors: Frank Federico and Herman Margulies. Dick paints on location (“plein-air”) whenever possible, but because of his schedule, more often than not relies on value-sketches on-site and photos to be converted to paintings in his studio.
